They’re safe.  19 year old Aislinn and her nine month old son have made it out of the Ukraine.  Mother, son and boyfriend made a harrowing 7 mile trip over the mountains into Slovakia.

Dr. William Hubbard of Fitchburg journeyed through war torn Ukraine to rescue his family and after being detained he has also made it across the border.

We spoke with Dr. Hubbard in Austria where he and his daughter, her boyfriend and grandson are staying. Sadly, as we spoke with Dr. Hubbard it was clear they are safe and sound due to their perseverance, guts and ingenuity, not because of any help they received from the State Department.  Time and again they were stymied by red tape and an uncaring bureaucracy.  At one point the American embassy in Warsaw would have had them live on the streets of Lviv while awaiting a birth certificate and passport for nine month old Seraphim.

Dr. Hubbard tells us Senator Elizabeth Warren never bothered to answer their plea for help and the efforts of other members of the delegation proved ineffectual.  They were on their own.

At one point after being told by U.S. authorities they should be able to cross the border they were detained and split up by Ukrainian authorities who despite a DNA test proving the baby’s parentage accused them of child trafficking.  Through it all Dr. William Hubbard, his wife Dr. Deborah Hubbard who worked tirelessly on the home-front to try and get help, never abandoned their daughter.  Aislinn, like so many others, has lost everything.

She will now begin to rebuild her life in Europe.
