An update on “Operation Welcome”

Jan 12, 2022

An update on “Operation Welcome” on “Talk of the Commonwealth with Hank  Stolz” from Tim Garvin, President & CEO of United Way of Central MA; and Tony Economou, RE/MAX Advantage 1 Broker/Associate/Realtor. Garvin said about 350 Afghan evacuees have been settled in Worcester so far with more to come.  The United Way of Central MA, The Worcester Regional Chamber of Commerce and Worcester Together are engaged in supplying food, clothing and shelter and finding work for the refugees.  Economou, who is spearheading efforts to find housing, said that with the Worcester housing boom it has been difficult.  He asked that anyone, perhaps an owner of a three decker with available floors, or anyone that can help to contact him at (508) 868-2759 or e-mail

How You Can Help

About 55,000 Afghans have been resettled nationwide and around 20,500 people remain at domestic military bases as of January 6. Worcester Together is a citywide partnership that was initially established to support our region’s Covid-19 response, relief, and recovery efforts. Worcester Together continues to address immediate and long-term community needs, complementing the work of public health officials and expanding local capacity to address the impact of this public health crisis on our region’s vulnerable populations.
