Augustus “… I just don’t think it fits in with the aesthetic of that block”

Feb 2, 2022

I think it is an improvement over what was there before

City Manager Ed Augustus was asked his thoughts on the new glass facade to the “old” midtown mall.

“I’m not an architectural critic although I play one on TV and radio, I guess, I think it is an improvement over what was there before but honestly I just don’t think it fits in with the aesthetic of that block given the fact that the midtown mall is bookended, if you will, by two historic buildings, to have a glass facade in the middle  just seems out of character to me with that block.”

The manager is hopeful the Brazilian Steakhouse and other planned tenets for the space come to pass and said he realizes some may like the new look and that beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

The City Manager also spoke about the possibility of more housing coming to downtown, the start of Black History month, storm cleanup and more.
