Recent Incidents Increase Doherty High Security Concerns
A 41-year-old Canton man with a violent history has been charged after he allegedly brought a gun into Doherty High School and went looking for a student.
On Wednesday, December 15th, Jerome Weekes is alleged to have entered the school as classes were being dismissed for the day. According to Worcester Police, he was accompanied by his daughter, and they appeared to be looking for another student. Police say Weekes was observed to have a gun in his vehicle while he sat outside the school, and is suspected of having it in his sweatshirt as he searched a classroom and hallways looking for someone. His daughter is reported to be having a problem with a male student. Police have spoken to witnesses and viewed surveillance footage from cameras inside the school.
During a discussion of the incident on Talk of the Commonwealth, School Committee member Laura Clancey called in and said she feels the school is safe, that her daughter went to her classes at Doherty Monday, but that she has questions about how Weekes was able to enter the building. Clancey also said she was told that the School Resource Officer was on vacation last week, but there is a security guard at the front door to check people in.
